Spilling the Secrets to Interview Success

Getting ahead and organised is one of the smartest moves you can make when applying to medicine. The process is intense, and with interviews coming up, now is the time to convert your potential into an offer. Even if it feels a little early, the truth is, the students who secure their dream offers are often the ones who begin before everyone else. That’s why, to help you get ahead, I’m spilling the secrets to the 3 essential pillars of medicine interview success

  1. Master the content: you need a strong foundation of knowledge so you can confidently tackle any question
  2. Understand the psychology of the interviewer: knowing what they’re really looking for allows you to structure your answers in a way that stands out
  3. Develop the art of communication and presentation: how you speak, present yourself, and connect with the interviewer often matters as much as what you say

How to Make a Strategic Application

Knowing which universities to apply to can be a confusing process. Each university has different requirements, and the biggest mistake students make is not doing enough research.

It is completely possible to guarantee yourself 4/4 pre-interview offers. The way you can do that is through research! I’m going to tell you the exact steps you need to take to help you get your offers.

  1. Make a list of all the universities that you would be interested in applying to. It is important to take your preferences into consideration, such as location, course structure, intercalation options, etc.
  2. Then, for each of these universities, research their entry requirements. The best place to look is on the university website, or call the university admissions office directly and find out their criteria for who gets called for an interview.
  3. Once you know each university’s requirements and how they call students for an interview, you need to work out your scores. Calculate what your score is based on each specific university.
  4. Now you need to compare your score to previous admissions data. Some universities do publish their admissions data from previous cycles, making it easy to compare; however, some don’t. Essentially, you need to work out what your chance of being invited to an interview is.
  5. Once you have done this, you can finalise your universities. My advice is to have at least 2 safe options. What I mean by this is 2 universities, you have a very high chance of being called for an interview. Then have 1 or 2 aspirational universities. These could be universities where you might be on the borderline for being called for an interview.

To help you get started, I’ve linked my UCAT University guide down below, which has the list of some universities which are high UCAT, mid UCAT and low UCAT universities. However, it is important to remember that this is a general guide. The change in the UCAT, specifically the removal of abstract reasoning, can impact UCAT thresholds. Additionally, the change of the personal statement structure could make universities change the emphasis placed on it. It is essential to look at your academic, extracurricular and widening participation profile holistically and research in detail tailored to your personal profile.
