UCAT Crash Course

It feels like the the UCAT is a test designed to make you fail. Yet it has such a significant impact on your chances of... Read more

Should you be doing 2 mocks a day?

This is one of the most asked questions I get as a UCAT tutor. And the answer often surprises students.

After you have sit your first mock exam you press submit. Wait for the results to load. And the score isn’t what you were hoping for. So you freak out. And sit another mock exam. But you end up scoring even worse.

A UCAT mock exam is very strenuous and intense. Sitting even one exam takes a lot of energy. So in most situations you end up performing worse when you sit a second exam.

If you sit a mock exam and feel really disappointed in the score you’re seeing here’s what used to work better for me instead of sitting another mock exam.

First take a break away from the screen. Every time I felt upset or annoyed because of my score the first thing I would do is go away from the screen by going on a walk or talking to a friend.

Once you feel more rested go through the mock exam and reflect in detail on each of the questions you have got wrong. Remember to create your error log or go over technique. If you need more detail on how to reflect on UCAT mocks check out last week’s newsletter edition.

Do a combination of untimed and timed practice questions on your weaker areas.

Rather than doing another mock exam and feeling worse its best to focus on the areas that actually need your attention. It’s important focus on what you learnt each day and try not to let the scores your seeing dictate how you feel.

Isn't it too early?

And I know some of you will think its too early, but its time to start thinking about your personal statement. You don’t need to have a perfectly written, ready-to-submit draft. You just need to start planning it so you’re not stressing a week before the deadline.

Getting started is probably the hardest part. You have a blank page in front of you. Ideas in your head, but no idea how to phrase them. You’re probably trying to write out the perfect first draft with every single one of your experiences whilst ticking off everything you think your universities want.

So I want you to start of extremely simply so there is no pressure but you will quickly be able to identify any gaps.

Create a mind map of all your experiences. Work experience, volunteering, extracurriculars, hobbies, just everything. From this, draw arrows of key skills and reflection insights for each of these activities you have done. This task helps you to overcome the first mental barrier to writing your personal statement. It helps you to just write out all of your ideas, and now you can piece your experiences together so much more easily. So if you’re struggling to get started on your, use this as a stepping stone to your path of writing an amazing personal statement.

Medify vs Medentry

Which question bank is better? Are you more likely to get a top-decile score if you use one over the other? This has always been a big debate among UCAT applicants.

As someone who achieved a top-decile UCAT score and used both question banks, here’s my honest comparison.

I started my preparation with Medify and completed most of my practice questions there. Although it’s a strong platform, I found the questions noticeably harder than the official UCAT and UCAT mocks, which often left me scoring lower than expected.

Towards the end of my revision, I switched to Medentry. While I used it for a shorter period, I found the question style and difficulty much closer to my actual UCAT exam.

Ultimately, both are excellent question banks, and choosing one over the other won’t determine whether you achieve a top-decile score. My advice is to use the free trial for both, try the skills trainers and practice questions, and see which feels most representative of the official UCAT mocks.

From my experience, Medentry was the closer match to the real exam. If you decide to use it, you can use the discount code MEDWLOVE for 10% off.
